What is fixed and what may change

The 11 federal holidays are set by law in 5 U.S.C. 6103. The dates match the 2027 list published by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

For federal employees, a holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and a holiday on a Sunday on the Monday after. In 2027 this moves four days off: 18 June, 5 July, 24 December and 31 December (for 1 January 2028).

Federal holidays bind the federal government as an employer. Federal law does not require private employers to give holidays off or to pay for them; this is a matter of agreement between employer and employee.

States have their own holidays, which are not shown here.
