What is fixed and what may change

The law gives 13 public holidays: New Year (1 day), Spring Festival (4 days, from lunar New Year's Eve), Qingming (1), Labour Day (2), Dragon Boat (1), Mid-Autumn (1) and National Day (3). Since 2025 Spring Festival and Labour Day each have one more day.

The exact days off for 2027 were published by the State Council on 5 November 2026. Holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday are made up on weekdays, and some weekdays are swapped with weekends to form longer breaks: 9 days for Spring Festival, 5 for Labour Day and 7 for National Day.

In return, five weekend days are working days: Sunday 31 January, Sunday 14 February, Saturday 8 May, Sunday 26 September and Saturday 9 October.

Some days are off only for part of the population, for example a half day for women on 8 March and a day for children under 14 on 1 June. These are not made up when they fall on a weekend.
