What is fixed and what may change

The rest days follow from section 18A of the Law and Administration Ordinance and the Independence Day Law. They follow the Hebrew calendar, which is fixed in advance, so all 2027 dates are final.

Each holiday begins at sunset the evening before. On the day before a holiday a working day may not be longer than seven hours (Hours of Work and Rest Law, section 2). Collective agreements may set even shorter hours.

The weekend is Friday and Saturday. Holidays that fall on a Friday or Saturday are not moved. In 2027 Shavuot is on a Friday, and the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret are on a Saturday.

Employees who are not Jewish have the right to rest on their own holidays instead. The intermediate days of Passover and Sukkot are not rest days under the law.
