What is fixed and what may change
India has no single list of public holidays for private employers. Each state sets holidays for shops, factories and offices under its own laws. These laws include 26 January, 15 August and 2 October as paid holidays (for example the Karnataka Act of 1963), so we show these three days as national holidays.
The other dates come from the central government list for 2027 (DoPT office memorandum of 16 July 2026). It applies to central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi. Central government offices elsewhere keep 14 compulsory holidays and choose 3 more per state, so Holi, Ram Navami and Janmashtami may be replaced there.
The dates of Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Muharram and Milad-un-Nabi may change after the moon is sighted; the government then announces the new date, sometimes at short notice.
For central government offices, a holiday that falls on a weekly day off is not replaced by another day. Banks follow separate rules. The weekly day off in private companies depends on state law and on the employer.
